What is a Title Tag?:

The Title Tag is a line of html code that resides in within the HEAD tags of an HTML file/webpage. The Title Tag is a very brief description of the contents of the page. It is not visible on the page itself, but shows up on the browser window title bar.

What Should I Put In My Title Tags?:

Man, this is the crux of most people’s problem. A huge offering of SEO tools and SEO books are built for SEO Keyword selection. Find out more about Keyword Selection. For this lesson’s purpose we will keep it simple. Your Title Tag should make sense and be readable. It will be the first line a search engine displays about your site. If you saw “SEO, Small Business, Keyword Selection, Search Engine Optimization, Local Business…” (Keywords) as the title of my site, you most likely would have passed on to the next more readable link. But when or if you read, “SEO for Small Business | Practical Free SEO advice” it better catches the readers imagination.

Overall, if you select the top one or two keywords and build them into catchy concepts you got a winner.

Oh, and if you found when you looked at your page above and found no title tag or the word “Home” as the only word. YOU WILL BOOST YOUR RANKING BY JUST PUTTING IN A KEYWORD OR TWO. DO IT!!!!

The Title Tag should be within the HEAD <head> </head> section. If it is missing, in any other section than the HEAD or duplicated it is wrong and will not help and could possibly harm your ranking.

Why Bother With A Title?:

Title Tags are probably provide the most bang for your buck. If you were to only do one-step for your SEO re-vamp, this would be it. It is the most important feature of on page SEO. It is also very easy to accomplish if you are handy with a text editor and have a smattering of HTML knowledge.

Some Quick Rules/Guidelines/Tip for Title Tags:

  1. Do Not Keyword Stuff
  2. Target the top one or two keywords or keyword phrases only
  3. Eliminate Fluff Words (And, The, Finest, Best…)
  4. It you really feel you need your Business Name, put it at the end.
  5. Keep to no more than 60-70 characters (66 is Google limit, 120 for Yahoo)
  6. Use Title Case, not all Caps or all lowercase.
  7. Each Page on your site should have a UNIQUE title!
  8. The title should indicate what is found on the page.
  9. Keep most important Keywords/Phrases towards the start 
  10. Title should not appear in copy text of the page verbatim. 
  11. For Local Businesses Include the City (and State if it will fit)
