What Makes A Good Inbound Link? At Least in Theory...:

There are a number of criteria that make the oomph or power of your SEO and SERP benefit from an Inbound Link or External Link. SOme are real, others may be imagined...

  • Refering Pages Relevance
  • Refering Pages Google Page Rank (Google Serp and also decent indication of weight given by MSN/BIng and Yahoo)
  • Keywords used in link
  • Keywords used in Link and their relavance to the content of target page
  • Number of Links the Source has going to other locations (nuetralizes link farms)
  • Location (IP Network) and proximity of source to target (Prevents creating a thousands sites on on server and pointing all the links at one to artificially improve link counts)
  • Age Of Link (Or page that it is on)
  • Type of Link (Text, Picture...)
  • Text Proceeding and Following Link
  • TLD or Top Level Domain ( .GOV and .ORG beat .RU or .CN)
  • Location of Link on Page
  • Link to Content Ratio of Source
  • Whether Elvis is still Alive

As you can see there are many factors and many more not listed that you don't have a snowballs chance of having any impact on. But if you read between the lines you can avoid some mistakes. Like avoiding Link Farms and non relevant Link Exchanges.We cannot stress strongly enough, doing your SEO right and not taking short cuts will bring stronger long term SEO results. Playing tricks might boost you for a few months, but then get you banned. Are you in business for a quick buck or the long term?

An example of a good quality link exchange might be a when a CPA firm and Tax Law firm agree to funnel links back and forth, but not the same pages. Another might be where a foodie blogger who reviews food and your restaurant could also pair up.

Some bad examples are where you sign up for someone else to manage your links and hope they pair you well. What if your gourmet chocolates gets paired with a plumber, or imagine what happens if your local Shoe Store blindly exchanges links and a shrewed SEO firm pairs you with their client a national Shoe Chain that sells your same stock at 10% less with free shipping, but buries your link so deep that no one will ever find it
